In the early morning hours of Friday September 26, 2008, the Vails Gate Fire Department responded to a 2 alarm blaze in a strip mall on Route 207 near the entrance to Stewart International Airport.  Under the command of Chief Robert Shultz, the fire was brought under control in about one hour.  The operation required two towers, three 2.5 inch hand lines and two 1.75 inch hand lines.  Mutual aid from New Windsor, Air National Guard, and Winona Lake Engine Company were on scene battling the fire, while Cornwall and Salisbury Mills stood by at Vails Gate for back-up.  The fire which destroyed three businesses in the strip mall, is under investigation, and there were no reported injuries.
