Winona Lake Braves Violent Car Fire

Saturday August 1, 2009

Newburgh , NY – Saturday August 1, 2009 - The Winona Lake Engine Company was called to the Lowes parking lot at the corner of Rt 300 and Rt 17K this afternoon for a working car fire.  Upon arrival, Chief Anthony Weed, Sr. radioed to his responding units that they have a fully involved working car fire.

While awaiting for his units to arrive, Chief Weed directed Lowes management to announce to their customers that they needed to move their own vehicles from the immediate vicinity to avoid damage from caused by the heat & fire.  One vehicle remained too close, and Chief Weed began to apply water from a PW “can” in an attempt to keep the paint from becoming damaged.  That car was subsequently moved by the patron.

When WLEC Engine 320 arrived on scene, the crew went to work under the direction of Captain Andrew Colurciello, who lead his men directly into the danger of what was by this time a violently ripping storm of fire and fury.  (see the clip on YouTube)  Deploying a 1 ¾” handline the brave firefighters attacked the billowing blaze and smothered what was once a City of Newburgh Yellow Taxi cab in a deluge of pure & professional firefighting style.

An ambulance was summoned to the scene for smoke inhalation by one of the patrons of the store.  That persons condition was not available at press time.
